چکیده
background and aims. recent reports suggest that some of the risk factors for periodontal disease are similar to those of certain systemic diseases, and that periodontal disease itself may be a risk factor for some systemic diseases. therefore, the present study investigated the association of markers of metabolic control and systemic inflammation in diabetics with the extent and severity of periodontal disease; in addition, the relative cardiovascular risk was evaluated in such patients. materials and methods. a total of 50 known diabetic subjects participated in the study. periodontal examination included a full-mouth assessment for bleeding on probing using sulcus bleeding index (sbi) and probing depths (pd). blood analyses were carried out for glycosylated hemoglobin, (hba1c), c-reactive protein (crp) and lipid profile. results. periodontal disease severity, in terms of sbi scores and pd, was found to be associated with inadequate glycemic control as measured by hba1c. similarly, increased probing depths were associated with increased crp levels, total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, and triglycerides (p<0.05). conclusion. the results suggest that patients with poorer glycemic control are at increased risk for periodontitis with an associated risk for cardiovascular disease.

Comparison of periodontal parameters and metabolic glucose levels in patients with diabetes and healthy subjects
Background: For decades, it was suspected that diabetes contributed to poorer oral health and the increased frequency of periodontitis. More recently it was found that periodontitis could adversely affect glycemic control in diabetics. The aim of this study was to compare periodontal parameters with the metabolic sugar levels of diabetic and non-diabetic individuals. Materials and Methods: I...
متن کاملCorrelation between smoking and severity of periodontal disease in patients with periodontitis in Kerman
Introduction: Periodontitis is a common inflammatory disease of dental supporting tissues caused by bacteria, leading to inflammation, irreversible gum attachment loss, and alveolar bone destruction and eventually tooth loss. While infection is a necessary prerequisite for developing periodontitis, its course and severity depend on a number or factors including inheritance, health behaviors and...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Attributional Style and Mental Health in Diabetic Patients with Good and Poor Metabolic Control of diabetes
Diabetes is one of the common diseases which is increasingly rising in most countries and has wide a range of complications ranging from physical to psychological problems. Given the importance of this disease, this study aims to investigate the relationship between attributional style and general health in diabetic patients with good and poor metabolic control of diabetes. The main research qu...
متن کاملCorrelation between Diet Quality and Metabolic Syndrome
Background: The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing with an alarming rate world wide. Since diet components' studies that focus on MetS have produced largely inconsistent results, assessing the whole diet than single nutrients on health can be more practical. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between diet quality and MetS components. Methods: This cross-sectional st...
متن کاملPrevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with Periodontal Disease
Background & Aims: Metabolic syndrome is composed of interrelated cardiovascular and cardiometabolic risk factors. Moreover, recent researches have illustrated the association of systemic diseases and periodontitis. Thus, the early diagnosis of this syndrome, as a cardiometabolic risk factor, seems necessary. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Metabolic Risk Factors in Type 2 Diabetic Patients
Abstract Objective: Globally, 3-5.2 percent of people suffer from diabetes which is one of the most serious metabolic disorders resulting in an increase in inflammatory biomarkers e.g. interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and C-reactive protein. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between inflammation, oxidative stress and fasting blood glucose, lipid profile and a...
